Gesualdo

History: The friary of Gesualdo, in the province of Avellino was built in 1592 by Prince Carlo Gesualdo. It was completed by Prince Nicolo Ludovisio. The friary belonged to the religious Capuchin province of Naples. In 1866, it was suppressed with the anti-religious policies of the Italian government. The province of Naples, no longer able  to keep up the friary, handed it over to the province of Foggia, to the Provincial Minister, Fr.  Pio of Fragneto L’Abate. The formal possession of the friary took place on 16 July 1906. After the necessary restoration of the friary and church, the superiors designated it as the student house. In 1909, in fact it was  the student centre for theology for the Foggia province.

Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was a student here (November – December 1909). It was a  Seraphic seminary for 30 years (1926-1956). In 1980, the friary  was   destroyed in an earthquake and  was inhabitable. Today the friary has been restored to its original state.
