The museum has archaeological and lapidary sections, an art gallery (with 18th-century paintings from the Neapolitan School and works by Pugliese masters), historial and scientific sections and another on folk traditions. Of special interest are Daunian ceramics, Apulian red figurative ceramics and the works of Saverio Altamura.

Housed in the 18th-century Palazzo Cavalli, the museum has a collection of local classical statuary which includes a Greco-Roman Marine Venus and a head of Hercules of the Lisippean school, paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th century, a collection of old weapons and musical instruments, Capodimonte ceramics and an ethnographic collection.

Until the end of September 2000 the museum will be playing host to an Italian first - the exhibition centred on a precious group of bronzes from the 8th century B.C. known as the "Lucera Handcart", found in Lucera in the 19th century and kept in the Oxford Museum.

The museum contains material on the local peasant culture. The structure itself is of great interest, as well as a Medieval trappeto - one of the first oil extraction plants (14th century), located in natural cavities in the old centre.
